Everything We Know Right Now About The Allegations Against Lizzo
Grammy winner Lizzo, best known as the "Truth Hurts" singer, has always been vocal about body positivity and women's empowerment. However, recent allegations by Lizzo's former employees, Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams, and Noelle Rodriguez, have rattled her pristine image. On August 1, the trio initiated a lawsuit detailing claims ranging from sexual harassment to fostering a hostile work environment.
Two days post the unveiling of this lawsuit against Lizzo, her touring company, and dance captain Shirlene Quigley, the singer responded via Instagram, asserting the allegations were "false" and "outrageous". The plaintiffs gave their side of the story in a Channel 4 interview, re-emphasizing the traumas they allegedly faced while working under Lizzo's banner.
One standout claim from the lawsuit revolves around an Amsterdam incident. Here, Lizzo is alleged to have pressurized Davis into an uncomfortable encounter at a strip club, conflicting with Davis's religious beliefs. The claim was further elaborated in a CBS News appearance by Davis, where she described her reluctance and subsequent humiliation.
Additionally, the "Watch Out for the Big Grrrls" Amazon Prime Video reality show came under scrutiny, as Davis and Williams, who were part of the show, pointed out discrepancies in their treatment. Davis mentioned receiving subtle weight comments, bordering on fatphobia, hinting at dissatisfaction from Lizzo and her choreographer due to her weight gain post her initial casting.
This lawsuit encompasses a plethora of charges including assault, racial and religious harassment, and even false imprisonment.
The ripple effect of the lawsuit is evident. Other associates from Lizzo's past, like her ex-creative director Quinn Wilson, have voiced their discontent, the latter "echoing" the sentiments of the plaintiffs on Instagram. Moreover, filmmaker Sophia Nahli Allison painted a contrasting portrait of the singer, dubbing her "arrogant, unkind, and cruel".
While Lizzo's public image undergoes scrutiny due to these discrimination claims and negative experiences, it remains pivotal to approach the situation with a presumption of innocence. Yet, the convergence of voices poses pressing questions about the true face behind Lizzo's empowering persona.
